Essential Reading
Tresca, Amber. "Understanding Stress Related to Time Management." LoveToKnow. N.p., 2006. Web. 20 Oct. 2015.
This source discussed the relationship between time management and stress, and techniques that could help college students reduce their stress and anxiety levels. In today's world college students feel that they have too much to do and too little time to do it in , which can cause major stress. This stress due to poor time management can lead to missed deadlines, poor performance in school or work, and health problems. A study in the Journal of Health Educational Psychology showed that students who use their time wisely reported feeling less stress. This source also discussed the importance of coming up with a time management strategy that works for each individual in order to be successful in the future. This source was helpful because it showed how poor time management is causing college students to feel stressed, and emphasized the importance of getting help with this issue.
Britz, Jacqueline. "Undergraduate Research Journal for the Human Sciences." Undergraduate Research Journal for the Human Sciences. N.p., n.d. Web. 15 Oct. 2015.
This source focused on the correlation between stress among college students and unhealthy habits. A research study was conducted among freshman at James Madison University. This study revealed that over 50% of college students report high levels of stress, and high levels of stress were correlated with a decreased quantity of sleep. This study also discussed the number of hours of sleep that the average college student receives. Results showed that college students are receiving less than 7 hours of sleep a night. This source was helpful because it gave statistical evidence that stress among college students is caused by a lack of sleep,
Khatib, Ahmad. "Time Management and Its Relation to Students’ Stress, Gender and Academic Achie." N.p., May 2014. Web. Oct. 2015
This study was conducted among 352 college students from Al Ain University of Science and Technology. The objective of this study was to find a relationship between time management, perceived stress, gender, and academic achievement. Within this study time management was measured by a questionnaire developed by Britton and Tesser, while perceived stressed was measured by The Perceived Stress scales create by Cohen. This study showed that there was a negative relationship between time management and perceived stress. This meant that if a student does not feel that they are in control of their time they will have increased levels of stress, whereas students who manage their time well experience low stress levels. This study was helpful because it showed the correlation between stress and time management, and gave statistical facts in order to back up its claims.
Woolston, Chris. "Sleep Deprivation and Stress." Sleep Deprivation and Stress. N.p., n.d. Web. 15 Oct. 2015
This source focused on the connection between sleep and stress. It discussed how the shortfall of deep, restful sleep puts a heavy toll on a person both physically and mentally. This source also discussed how the body uses a chain of chemicals to send messages of stress. This works by the brain releasing a hormone called CRH, this hormones prompts the pituitary gland to produce ACTH, ACTH tell the adrenal gland to release adrenaline and other stress hormones. A good night sleep blocks this chain reaction because the brain chemical that causes a good night sleep tells the pituitary gland to slow down the production of ACTH and a person gets a chance to rest. There were also studies discussed from the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism that showed how stress level increased with the lack of this. This source also discussed what the National Sleep Foundation recommended for getting a good night sleep. This included winding down an hour before bed-no television, no phone calls, and not catching up on work. This source was helpful because it showed the scientific reason between stress and the lack of sleep
Ekpenyong, Christopher E., Nyebuk E. Daniel, and Ekpe O. Aribo. "Associations Between Academic Stressors, Reaction to Stress, Coping Strategies and Musculoskeletal Disorders Among College Students." Ethiopian Journal of Health Sciences. Research and Publications Office of Jimma University, n.d. Web. 15 Oct. 2015.
This source discussed the association between academic demands and stress. Stress can be caused by many things but this source discussed causes such as: academic demands, finances, time pressures, and self imposed stressors. College students are shown to have high levels of stress because of intensive academic workloads, the required knowledge base, and having inadequate time to develop that knowledge. It was also mentioned that college students feel that most of their stress comes from studying and taking exams. Stress that comes from academic demands can lead to a disruption in the internal and external environment of a student’s body and can cause physiological changes. This source was helpful because it discussed how students felt about the academic demands placed on them and how these demands were causing them to feel stressed. It also gave great detail about the affects that stressed caused by academic demands had on college students.
Ongori, H., and Agolla, J.E.. "An Assessment of Academic Stress Among Undergraduate Students : The Case of University of Botswana." Academic Journals, 2009. Web. 2015.
This source discussed the stressors, symptoms, and effects that are likely to be experienced by undergraduate college students. Academic workload, inadequate resources, low motivation, and poor performance in academics were identified as causes of stress among college students. This source also discussed how poorly colleges, and universities are handling stress caused by academic demands and wanted to use their findings to help students, universities, colleges, and counselors find ways to eliminate academic stress among college studies. This source was helpful because it not only showed that academic demands were a cause of stress among college students but it also explained on a deeper level why these problems were not getting resolved.
