College students today are completely overwhelmed with the demands of school, work, family, and social schedules. They have hectic schedules and increased pressure to succeed in all their activities. College students feel that they have too much to do and not enough time to do it in and this causes a significant amount of stress. This stress is due to a lack of time management, which can cause poor performance in school and other areas as well.
Poor time management behaviors includes not allocating time properly or cramming for an exam at the last minute. Macan, author in the Journal of Educational Psychology found that lower stress levels are strongly correlated to the factor ,perceived control of time. This means that students who do not feel that they are in control of their time will feel more stressed than those who feel that they are in control of their time. Misra, and Mckean, authors in the American Journal of Health Studies, conducted another study that showed that there was a relationship between time management, stress reduction, and increased academic achievement.
A study was conducted by Al Ain University of Science and Technology which showed that 59.7% of students possessed a time management score at a moderate level, 14.8% of students possessed low levels of time management and 25.5% of students possessed high levels of time management. The results showed that college students lack an adequate amount of knowledge on how to manage their time wisely. This study also showed that there is an inverse and significant relationships between time management and stress. This means that too much work and lack of control over time are major sources of stress, and time management can reduce the levels of stress by getting rid of the time-related stressor factors.
Balduf, published author in the Journal of Advanced Academics, recognized that poor time management can contribute to poor academic achievement. Britton and Tesser, literary authors in the Journal of Educational Psychology, also conducted a study. This study found that 67% of undergraduate students identified time management as their most pressing problem.
Research has shown that time management is a major part of a complete stress management plan. A study published in the Journal of Education Psychology showed that students who used their time wisely reported less stress and felt they has better control over their time (Tresca, 2006). Another study published in Work& Stress showed that college students who were holding jobs and attending class lowered their stress levels by using stress management techniques (Tresca,2006).
As seen from research and studies conducted above, one can see that poor time management is a major cause of stress among college students. Gaining the correct tools to manage time wisely will be more beneficial to college students in the long-run.
