Why does stress matter to college students?

Stress is an occurrence that one faces in any aspect of their life. Although stress can be found in the lives of every individual, college students have been shown to have a unique form of stress that affects their everyday experiences. Sharon Hall, author of “The Impact of Stress on Academic Success in College Students”, discussed how college students are faced with unique stressors that cause them to be overwhelmed and can cause them to have trouble coping with situations. Stress is becoming major issue among college students today because of the negative effects it causes.
Dr. Hans Seyle, a renowned endocrinologist who studied the origins of stress, defined stress as “ the non-specific response of the body to any demand for change.” It is important to understand the definition of stress because this term is highly subjective. Since stress is very subjective it can be difficult to navigate solutions to solve this issue. While coming up with solutions for this issue may be a daunting task, leaving this issue unresolved in can lead to severe effects such as a stroke, heat attack, weight loss/gain, and panic attacks, and anxiety.
The issue addressed in this forum is how stress is caused and how these causes affect a students well-being and future. This problem is evident, throughout the research and surveys that were previously conducted; college students emphasized their negative feeling towards stress and how it was affecting them in different areas of their lives. According to the National College Health Assessment, a nationally recognized research survey, 43% of college students felt that they experienced more than and average amount of stress. Another survey was conducted by UCLA and found that 30% of all college freshman report feeling overwhelmed. Primary research was also conducted among college students around the Maryland-Virginia Area. This study revealed that 97% of college students feel that stress is a major issue, and 93% of college students feel that stress effects their well-being and also their future. A study was also conducted at Midwestern University which showed that stress among college students nationwide have been more of a disturbing trend then in the past.
